What you must do as a business person, is to protect yourself and to keep on protecting yourself.  If you’re selling on eBayit is only a matter of time before one of these emails, loved by scammers the world over, lands in your inbox! 

Here’s What You MUST Know

eBay will never send you an email, whether from them or a trading partner, that does not show up in your “My Messages” inbox.  If you receive an email from someone saying they are from eBay, go straight to your My Messages, if it is there, it is real!  If It isn’t there, it’s a fake!  The same is true of anything from a trading partner or a prospective trading partner.

PayPal will NEVER send you an email asking you for your details, period!  Any email that arrives in your inbox telling you that ‘PayPal is updating your information’!  It’s a scam email and if you follow the instructions in that email, you will lose!

The scammers will frighten you and scare you telling you that your PayPal account is about to be shut down if you don’t respond, but it is a trick.  Always send anything suspicious to Spoof at PayPaland they will let you know if your suspicions are correct!

Never click on an email that you suspect is fraudulent!  You never know what is embedded in the page and you might just be opening up your computer to anyone to see what you’re doing!

ALWAYS use a new browser window to access any information once you’ve opened what turns out to be a suspicious webpage or email.

Beware of emails from ‘buyers’ tell you that they have paid for an item and then scalding you for not yet shipping the item to you!  Go into your PayPal account (using a new browser window) and look if the payment is there!  If it is not there, then you have not been paid!  DO NOT SHIP THE ITEM!

A day or so later, you will probably receive an email from someone claiming to be PayPal!  The email will tell you that you have new funds!  The email will look convincing.  The logo will be there and so will all the other seals, but it will be a fake!

Again, go into your PayPal account (always using a new browser window) and see if the funds are there!  If they are not, forward the email to Spoof at PayPal and let them deal with it!

**TOP TIP**

Have two different email accounts, one for your PayPal and one for your eBay account!  That way, if you receive an email supposedly from PayPal and it comes to your eBay account email address, then you know point blank that it is a fake!

Keep your wits about you!  NEVER give out any information about yourself, passwords, user names etc. until you are more than 100% sure that you are dealing with a legitimate email/business.

How To Check Out Your Online Business Partner

1)  There should be full contact details on the website.  That means a contact name, full address and very important, telephone number.  Call the number and speak to someone.  Do it more than once!

2)  Do a WHOIS Search on the website.  Simply type in the URL of the website and you may get all the information you need to make a decision who is behind the site.  Does the information on the WHOIS search match who they say they are?  If it doesn’t you may well be dealing with a scammer who has faked contact details.

WHOIS will also allow you to check how long the site has been registered.  If it is only a few months, less than a year, then it could be a scammer who puts up a site very quickly to hit and run with your money.

You should also be aware that you can very easily opt to have your personal details blocked when your buy and register a domain.  This is a legitimate practice that honest business people often do, I routinely do it to protect my personal information.  For the scammer who intends to hit and run though, it can be a great cover as to their true identity. You have to weigh this, and any other information you gather, to see what the whole picture looks like.

3)  Get in your car or get on a plane and physically check out any potential business partner, do it!  Look around their premises, talk to local people, local Chambers of Commerce.  If they are legitimate, they won’t mind.

4)  Know your business!  You must do your homework on the business you  are looking to enter and you must be able to have in depth technical discussions with any potential business partner.  If they don’t know the jargon or have the technical knowledge about the business, be very careful.

5)  See if they will accepet Escrow  Legitmate companies and websites have nothing to fear with Escrow.

There are more checks you could do, but these are some to get you started.

This may all seem a little over the top, but it is far better to spend some time doing in depth detective work on a potential business partner/website than it is to send money blindly and to lose it.

2. Extra!  Extra!  The buzz word for trading now is to over deliver!  That means give your customer something extra when you package their item.  A handwritten note, a special thank you to them for buying from you.  A sample of another product that you have for sale with perhaps a discount for them personally if they buy from you again, within a certain amount of time!
3. Newsletter!  Boy, do I wish I had done this from day one - make sure you can stay in contact with your customers once they become your customers.  You have worked hard for them to be your customer and you want to keep it that way.  Enclose a link to your newsletter on your invoice and give them the option of signing up to it so that you can sell to them again.  Again, offer a discount incentive if they sign up.

Remember, this is your business and you should endeavour to start as you mean to go on.  Selling on eBay is a great and very cheap way of starting online and without it, I would not have made so much money and have the freedom today to pick and choose what I want to do.

See what I was doing was putting in the term “buy genuine wholesale designer online” - that’s why I chose the domain name!  Anyway I’d end up trawlling through pages of listings!  I was that desperate, I’d go as  deep as 30/40 pages and more sometimes!
